The Three Pedagogical Pigs and Their Adventures with Technology

nce upon a time, in the Forest of Education, there lived three little pedagogical pigs: Primary Pig, Secondary Pig and Techno Pig. Now the Forest of Education was large and deep and filled with many winding paths. Some paths lead nowhere, some were full of thorns and some would gently light the way with little rays of sunshine. One path was always filled with little creatures called researchers, wanting to know what was going on in the forest and trying to make sense of it all. This story was inspired by some research conducted by Alister Jones in his project called “Teachers’ Subject Subcultures and Curriculum Innovation: The Example of Technology Education” chapter nine in Researching Teaching. Although this research was based on the introduction of technology in New Zealand, it really could have happened anywhere.

ow these little pedagogical pigs were about to embark on an adventure in the Forest of Education. They each were working happily in their respective schools. Primary Pig worked at Straw Elementary, situated amongst a field of wheat. Secondary Pig worked on the edge of the forest far away from most of them in a school called The Sticks. In the optimum location, near central office, Techno Pig worked in The Solid Brick Academy. The adventure began when Mr. Wolfe, Director of Technology, decided to visit each of the little pigs to see how each was  managing the new technological directive he had issued….
